Soil Health

Water Management

- Fundamentals -
  • Healthy soils will capture and retain water better that soils with poor structure and/or organic matter

    • Better water retention leads to less nutrient runoff and less groundwater draw

  • Soil structure and texture are key to soil water retention

  • Reducing soil disturbance will improve water holding capacity

  • Deep rooting crop systems will assist with water infiltration and reduce runoff

  • Cover open soils as often as possible to reduce evaporation and salinity build-up in topsoil
