Soil Erosion

- Fundamentals -
  • Erosion is a significant problem for any agricultural soil.

  • Erosion removes topsoil, reduces soil organic matter and contributes to the breakdown of soil structure.

    • These factors reduce soil fertility and movement of air and water at the soil surface which can reduce crop yield.

    • Most erosion can be contributed to wind, water, or mechanical displacement.

  • The best way to protect erosion-prone soils is to use a complete management system including shelterbelts, annual barriers, proper residue management and crop rotations.
